Because Buenos Aires is very close to the border to Uruguay, it is possible to take excursions from the capital of Argentina to see the attractions and highlights of this country. Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay, founded 1726. It is an active town of trade with approx. 1,2 Mio inhabitants with colonial architecture and narrow alley ways in the old town. One meets with very old coffee shops, libraries and alley ways, which seem to be taken out of a storybook of the last century. Montevideo is also a civilised and culturally important metropolis. Many museums, good restaurants, cinemas, theatre and good beaches round up the picture of this town. A visit to this very attractive town is definitely worthwhile. From Buenos Aires are fly daily planes. It is also possible to make the trip with busses or speed boats and ferry boats. This drive over the Rio de la Plata. One can travel from Buenos Aires to Montevideo and stay there overnight.
Colonia del Sacramento: This town, locally called „Colonia“ was founded 1680 by the Portuguese and has only 20 000 inhabitants. It is a very pretty and looked after place, with many colonial buildings, narrow alley ways and a town wall. The ambience may remind the onlooker on old pirate Hollywood films. More historically interesting buildings can be found here. Colonia is situated on the Rio de la Plata almost across from Buenos Aires, which is by bus or speed boat accessible.
The Atlantik coast of Uruguay: The Interbalnearia Street joins the bathing resorts of Uruguay, which are on the Atlantic east of Montevideo. Of the numbered holiday resorts can only be mentioned the most important. Atlantida ( approx. 45km from Montevideo) has some nice bathing resorts and forests. Piriápolis (approx. 50 km from Atlantida) has an excellent beach, a marina, a golf course and more than 50 hotels. A hiking tour is possible on the nearby Pan de Azucar (6 km) .
