Santiago del Estero with the same named capital is located in the north of Argentina.

The territory is basically flat lands, only in the east are some hills. The landscape more than the population belongs to Gran Chaco and has a huge thornbush forest otherwise known as "Monte." In the southeast of the province are salt marshes. The fauna is composed of a combination of many exotic animals. The climate is subtropical and hot.

The province is scarcely populated, and the major part of the population lives in and around the capital. Culturally speaking Santiago del Estoero belongs to the northwest of the country. One of the languages still spoken is here the Quechua dialect, though it is on the brink of disappearing.

Santiago del Estero is the oldest, constanly lived-in town of Argentina. It was founded in 1553 by the Spanish, who came from Peru. Of tourist interest are the many thermal baths or hot springs of Termas de Río Hondo.
