Amongst the people here only Tucuman called, is San Miguel de Tucumán the biggest town of northwest Argentina (approx. 800,000 inhabitants). It is since its foundation 1565 historical trade centre, but offers also plenty of touristic diversions. Like all Argentine cities with the size of Tucuman, at noon, in the evening and at night it is the busiest. The main spot in town to see this is the Plaza Independencia, full of orange trees, flowers and palm trees. Monuments worthwhile visiting are, amongst others, some churches (amongst those the cathedral), the governmental seat (Casa de Independencia) and several museums.
In the close by mountains of the Sierras de Aconquija one can escape the muggy summer heat. In mountain villages like Tafí del Valle, San Javier and Villa Norgués you can enjoy sports activities such as trekking and hiking. In the surroundings of Tucuman is the Jesuit convent of Lules (16th century). |
