Salta is not only the second biggest, but also the prettiest city in the northwest of Argentina. It was founded in 1582 by the Spaniards and was an important transitcentre on the historical commercial route to Bolivia and Peru. The town was in the 18th and 19th century quite wealthy. Testaments to those times are the beautiful colonial buildings, which have all been restored with care. The best conserved monuments of that era are found here in Salta, Argentina. Here, you will find well tended palaces with patios and wooden balconies, a lovely cathedral, some very pretty churches, a wide, big plaza, a convent, several museums and galleries, all make this city enjoyable to see. Although Salta has about half a million inhabitants, it has conserved its relaxed, provincial character.
In Salta one can also find rare Indian arts and craftmanship in the Mercado artesanal or in many other shops of the town centre. The well known red-black Ponchos of the Gauchos can be bought here. The Salteños are people who love their fiesta and like to go out on the town. Also the leisure time activities and sport offers in the nearby surroundings are plentiful. The town is the point of departure of the tourist attraction the "Tren a las Nubes" (train through the clouds). Salta is 1,200m above sea level and is surrounded by a green valley with a very comfortable climate. |
