Throw a snowball into the oasis! Mendoza is a great option for a visit during your holidays in Argentina. Mendoza is a province found in the centre east of Argentina and being part of the "Cuyo" region. Its capital shares the same name.
The terrain is formed by a dry steppe and small, sandy deserts, whilst the capital is an oasis. In the west, the Andes raise their proud heads, with the highest peaks of the continent, the Aconcagua is almost 7,000m high. The climate here is dry with plenty of sun (between 320-350 sunny days a year); so the winters are rather cold and the summers are quite hot.
Most of the population is settled in the city of Mendoza (almost one million of inhabitants) and its descendants are mostly immigrants from Italy and Spain.
Having an extraordinary geographical situation, Mendoza can offer quite a lot to the visitor. First and foremost, it is the biggest and best known wine-growing district of Argentina with some of the best wines. The "Borgoña" of Argentina produces 70% of all the wine of the country, so you should definitely pay a visit to the bodegas here! The province is known to the rest of the world for its winter sport centres (Las Leñas, Los Penitentes) and is referred to as a place to ski in the Andes (Aconcagua, vulcano Tupungato). Various natural phenomenons like the Puente del Inca, a natural bridge of stone, a creation of erosion, situated on the way which crosses the Andes with Santiago de Chile. A little further south, in the region of Malargüe, active volcanoes are present. Also some thermal baths or hot springs (Villavicencio, Cacheuta) can be found in this area and the capital, well known for its cleanness, holds important conferences. |
