Fascinating indigenous landscape

San Salvador is the capital of the province Jujuy and is located in the northwest of Argentina.

It is divided in four climatic zones: in the south, a humid region with moderate temperatures. The subtropical areas are in northern and eastern regions outside the capital. The Gorge of Quebrada de Humahuaca is dry and cold and in the northwest. On the 3,500m high plateau of Puna Húmeda, inbetween the peaks of the Andes, the winters are very cold and the summers are moderately cool.

The majority of the population are Mestizes and ascendants from different Indian tribes like the Kollas and the Chiriguanos.

Jujuy shows more than any other region of the land, an authentic indigenous tradition and is therefore very attractive to tourists. However, the traditional carnival, held in the tourist strongholds of Humahuaca and Tilcara, with time, have developed into a professional spectacle.

The province capital was founded in 1565 and still gives off some of its original splendor. Deep canyons form the landscape and with the ore-coloured Andes it is a breathtaking sight to behold. The Quebrada de Humahuaca is one of the natural phenomenons of Argentina. The ruins of pre-Colombian towns such as Pucará, and Coctaca, or the photgenic town Humahuaca and the isolated Village Yavi on the border to Bolivia, offer interesting, historical views into the colonial life of this region in the Andes.
