Formosa, with the same named capital is a province situated in the furthest north of Argentina, which borders on the Río Paraguay to the east. The region is very flat and has marshland in the east.

The subtropical climate brings hot, humid summers and dry, warm winters. To the west of the province lies the inhospitable Gran Chaco, which is an impenetrable forest of thorn bushes.

Approximately 50% of the population are Mestizes, but there are also many traditional indigene people, amongst others such as the Wichi and the Matacos. For all of the things mentioned above, they make this region some of the most authentic of all of Argentina.

The biggest tourist attraction is without doubt the protective natural reserve, the national park Rio Pilcomayo, which offers a great variety of fauna like jaguars, pumas, alligators, turtles and snakes.
