Polka à la Guaraní. Corrientes.

Corrientes is a province in the northeast of Argentina. The name means “streams” and is derived from the two rivers Paraná and Uruguay. The from the natural border over more than 100km, this is also why this area is sometimes called "Mesopotamia". The capital that holds the same name is on the Río Paraná located.

The plain is covered with large swamps and some lakes, it is therefore, one of the most important water reservoirs of South America.

The population here is composed of the descendents of former colonists, though here however, French is spoken predominantly. Corrientes is infamous for its Indian legends of treasure.

Graham Greene’s novel “The Consul” was set in Corrientes. The town with its beautiful promenade is also known for its colourful carnival festival. On this occasion, a special kind of Polka, which is a mix of Indian Guarani musik, the so called Chamamé tanz music, is played.

The province offers also to spend the holiday in the nature reserve of the marshes of Ibera, rich in fauna and flora. On a hiking trip in the national park of Mburucuyá, many wild animals and plants can be seen. Tourists can also visit the immense embankment dam of Yacyretá.
